Comic-Themed Games

Here are the ten best comic books based on a video game: Tomb Raider, Mass Effect, Assassin’s Creed, Injustice, The Last of Us. We offer you the best adaptations of video games in comic books, either as a prequel or adjustment of its main plot.

These are the best comics based on a video game. And, Ojo, we warned you that it was not a natural selection. The marriage between video games and comics is a long-standing relationship. And while it is true that it has never been a secure relationship or even an avenue, mainly due to the very bad or Pappy adaptations of the cartoon games, in recent years, we have encountered amazing adaptations.

With this idea in mind, we have compiled ten titles that we consider to be the best adaptations of video games to comic books. These ten best video game comics, as you will see, are also due to different publishers, from Dark Horse to DC Comics, and different styles, from American cartoon to Amerimanga, to pure manga.

Also, as you can see, we have compiled a slightly varied list, with different gameplay genres. We haven’t left anything to chance. So you will find both comic adaptations of wrestling games, platforms, and adventures, as well as some typical RPG.

Finally, it should be noted that most of these titles are available in Spain. However, some of them are already discontinued. But that’s why don’t worry, if you still have problems, we point out that as soon as you search the second-hand comic book store or dive into online stores, you can find them.

  1. Injustice: Gods Among us
Possibly the best adaptation of a video game to date. DC Comics found a vein of gold in the comic book prequel to Injustice God Among Us. Tom Taylor, his screenwriter, revealed himself as a more than competent and capable writer, solving and developing the complicated task of narrating the five years before the game’s start. The best-regarded of DC Comics to date. In Spain, the ECC has published the Year in a single volume of luxury, and Year 2 in size one and volume 2.
  2. Tomb Raider
Fin Ediciones brought us The Dark Horse comic by Tomb Raider last year. Set between the reboot of Tomb Raider and The Rise of the Tomb Raider, this volume, entitled Tomb Raider: the time of the witch vol 1, tells of the adventures of Lara after the events of the video game. It is a story by Gail Simone (Bat-Girl, massacre, Agent-X) drawn by Nicolás Daniel Selma (S. H. O. O. T. FIRST) that serves as a bridge between the two games we are talking about. Very correct and consistent with the console plot, it is an ideal comic for Croft fans.
  3. Mass Effect
Dark Horse also developed a series of prequels and tie-in comics from the original Mass Effect trilogy. Panini edited much of this material in the volumes of invasion, planets of origin, evolution, and redemption (the latter has already been discontinued). These stories, as in his novels, dealt with themes never before developed in the games: the origin of the imaginary man, the rescue of Shepard’s body, the fall of Omega, etc. Although his visual section was not breaking, it was more than correct. At least that taste left us the Reading and review of Mass Effect: planets of Origin.
  4. Assassin’s Creed: The Fall & The Chain
A duet of unrepeatable comics about the world of Assassin’s Creed. As a prelude to the first game, the action of these two comics follows in the footsteps of the Templar Master Daniel Cross, the beginning of the purge of the Assassins in 2000. As long as this is narrated, the reader will also be able to review the story of Cross’s murderous ancestors: The Orelovs. So, the events of The Fall complement to your time with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Russia; while The Chain shows the outcome of the decisions of Nikolai Orelov. This last story left us a delicious taste of mouth after reading it for your review.
  5. Batman Arkham
In general, all the comics in the series Batman Arkham are pretty cool. Or let’s talk about the Book-Game Batman Arkham Origins, the sequel to Asylum titled Batman Arkham Unhinged, the prequel of Batman Arkham City, or the three volumes of Batman Arkham Knight, as well as Genesis, the series dedicated to the origin of the Arkham Knight. All collections are perfect complements for Batman fans. Not for nothing, they are signed by their best authors: Paul Dini and Peter J. Tomassi, who served as the leading writers of the games.
  6. The Last of Us: American Dreams
The prequel of The Last of Us, one of the true classics of PS3 and PS4 we also left a delicious taste. This proposal narrated the facts before the video game. This way, we found out how Ellie and Riley met and how they both fled, giving rise to the effects of the game. So we could understand more deeply, also explaining Ellie’s importance to the whole plot. This was a comic book signed by Neil Druckmann, Faith Erin Hicks, and Rachelle Rosenberg that planet currently publishes in our country under the title The Last of Us: American Dreams. And yes, we strongly recommend it.
  7. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Norma editorial has many Zelda titles in its catalog. And although the manga that has launched recently, dedicated to A Link to the Past and your version of Major’s Mask is priceless, if you want that you recommend a version neat and exciting, then I have to support the manga of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, that fits the facts of the game in the hands of Akira Himekawa. A reading that will leave us neither dissatisfied in any way.
